Filmmaker Sudipto Sen has clarified why he is not directing the upcoming sequel, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond. He stated that his decision was driven by the lack of comprehensive research and reliance on unverified sources. Sen, who directed the controversial yet commercially successful 2023 film The Kerala Story, explained that he chose not to helm the sequel, which is scheduled for release on February 27 and is directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
Sudipto Sen Reveals Why He Didn’t Direct The Kerala Story 2
The original film became a box office hit in 2023 and received two National Awards—Prashantanu Mohapatra for Best Cinematography and Sudipto Sen himself for Best Director. In an interview with India Today, Sen shared his reasons for stepping back from directing the sequel. “For the first film, I researched the subject for ten years. I could stand by every word and visual in that film. If the sequel expands beyond Kerala into other states, I cannot rely on WhatsApp forwards or newspaper reports,” he explained.
He emphasised the importance of thorough groundwork when dealing with sensitive topics. “Sensitive subjects require deep research and long-term study. Without that solid foundation, I wouldn’t feel responsible enough to direct it,” Sen added.
The Kerala Story 2 Controversy
The Kerala Story 2 trailer released on February 17, has ignited intense debate and attracted political attention. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan publicly criticised the film, calling it “false propaganda” and “poisonous.” Additionally, a biologist filed a petition in the Kerala HC challenging the film’s release. They alleged it was based on misinformation. The film is set to release in cinemas on February 27.
Sudipto Sen’s Charak
While Sudipto Sen is not helming the sequel, he is preparing for the release of his next film, Charak. It is scheduled to hit theatres on March 6. However, the project has encountered a setback. It has been refused certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The cast of Charak includes Anjali Patil, Sahidur Rahaman, Subrat Dutta, Shashi Bhushan, Nalneesh Neel, Shankhadeep, and Shounak Shyamal. The film is presented by PEN Studios and produced by Jayantilal Gada.
