Recent reports reveal that Udit Narayan married Deepa Jha in 1985 while still married to his first wife, Ranjana, without divorcing her. In a new development, Ranjana has accused Udit of having her uterus removed in 1996 during treatment at a hospital in Delhi, claiming she was unaware of the procedure at the time. This has sparked another controversy for the veteran singer.
Udit Narayan’s First Wife Deepa Jha Accuses Having Her Uterus Removed
Ranjana Narayan Jha, his first wife, filed a police complaint at Bihar’s Supaul Mahila Thana. She alleged that Udit’s two brothers and his second wife, Deepa, took her to a Delhi hospital for the operation without her consent. The complaint was lodged on February 10. She stated that her uterus was removed in 1996. And she only learned about it recently when consulting a doctor for other health issues. Udit married Deepa (née Gahatraj) in Mumbai in 1985, a year after his marriage to Ranjana.
She levelled serious criminal allegations against Udit Narayan, his two brothers, and his second wife. On Tuesday, Ranjana filed a formal complaint at the police station, accompanied by her advocate, Karunakant Jha. In her statement, she claimed she was part of a criminal conspiracy in which her uterus was removed without her knowledge. She said she only learned about this years later during medical treatment.
What Did She File In Her Complaint?
In her complaint, Ranjana identified herself as the 61-year-old daughter of Chandrakant Jha. She is a resident of Sanskrit Nirmali Ward No. 11 under the jurisdiction of Balua Bazar Police Station in Supaul district. She stated that she married Udit Narayan on December 7, 1984, according to Hindu customs and rituals. She further alleged that in 1996, under the guise of medical treatment, Udit, along with his brothers Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalit Narayan Jha, took her to a major hospital in Delhi. This was the location where her uterus was removed without her consent or awareness. Ranjana claimed that Deepa Narayan was also present at the hospital at that time.
Ranjana also recounted that in 2006, when she visited Mumbai, she was verbally abused by Udit and Deepa and was not allowed to enter their home. She then went to her in-laws’ residence in Nepal, where she was allegedly insulted and driven away. Since then, she has been living at her parents’ home.
She added that she had previously approached the Family Court in Supaul and the Women’s Commission. Udit had acknowledged her as his wife and signed a compromise agreement. However, she accused him of failing to honour his commitments and of neglecting her dignity and support.
Struggling with health issues and financial difficulties, Ranjana revealed that she only discovered the removal of her uterus during subsequent medical examinations. This revelation prompted her to file a new complaint at the Women’s Police Station.
Who Is Ranjana Narayan Jha?
Ranjana identified as a resident of Balua Bazar in Supaul. She was married to Udit before he gained fame as a singer in the Hindi film industry. They initially lived together in Bihar. However, Udit later left Bihar to pursue his music career in Mumbai. In 1985, he married Deepa in Mumbai, reportedly without divorcing Ranjana. Now 61, Ranjana had filed a maintenance case against Udit in 2025, which was heard in the Supaul Family Court.
Legal Proceedings With Udit Narayan
At the Supaul Family Court, Udit opted to contest the case rather than settle. Ranjana claimed that Udit abandoned her in Bihar and accused him of tracking her when she visited Mumbai. She also alleged that he withheld Rs 18 lakh from her after selling property in Nepal. She expressed her desire to live with him, citing her deteriorating health and her rights as his legal wife.
The dispute was escalated to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC). Lawyer S K Jha argued that, under Indian law, marrying a second wife without divorcing the first is illegal under the Hindu Marriage Act, rendering Udit’s marriage to Deepa unlawful. The lawyer further emphasised that Udit’s actions disrespected and violated Ranjana’s human rights.
Udit Narayan’s Response
Sources close to Udit claim he has paid Rs 15,000 per month in maintenance. It was increased to Rs 25,000 in 2021. He also gifted Ranjana agricultural land, a house worth Rs 1 crore, jewellery, and another land parcel worth Rs 25 lakh. Despite this, Ranjana publicly stated that she had not received adequate support from Udit as his first wife and had approached the Women’s Commission in 2006. She revealed that Udit had promised her a home and financial assistance, but these promises were not fulfilled.
Udit and Deepa have a son, Aditya Narayan, who is also a singer. Ranjana, on the other hand, lives alone and has no children.
