Baadshaho and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

With Akshay Kumar’s ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’, the long drought on Bollywood’s box office has ended. Almost all the movies post that are doing well, including ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, and even the recent releases ‘Baadshaho’ and ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’.

First, let’s talk about ‘Baadshaho’. The Emergency period drama starring Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Mishra, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta, Emraan Hashmi, and Vidyut Jammwal, may not have fared well on the critics’ meter, but the opening figures surely proved that the audience had a different verdict. Though it was nothing bumper, but reasonable enough and much better than many of the big-budget movies’ which tanked at the box office.

However, seems like ‘Baadshaho’ has completed its run, and won’t be able to earn much, as the fall in numbers of day eight is drastic. The movie has earned a meager amount of Rs 1.50 crores, which is quite poor, and this takes the total collection to Rs 55.75 crore. The drop is nearly more than 50% from Thursday. The movie needs to earn at least Rs 80 crore to be called a decent one, but given the trend, it does not seem a plausible destiny for it. On the other hand, seems like audience is loving the small-town flavour in movies. After the success of ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, it is Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar’s ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ which is winning hearts and not stopping at the box office. The movie is based on the issue of erectile dysfunction, and how a couple who is about to get married, deal with the same.

On its eighth day, ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ earned Rs 1.50 crore, which is the same as ‘Baadshaho’, but can be termed good in this case, as it is a low-budget movie. The drop from Thursday is no more than 25-30%, which is decent. This takes the total collection of the movie to Rs 25.25 crore, and at this rate, the movie is surely going to emerge as a HIT. A win-win for Bhumi Pednekar, for whom it will be a second success in the year, after ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’.

Now that Arjun Rampal’s much-awaited biopic on gangster-politician, ‘Daddy’, has released, let’s wait and see how it impacts the run of both these movies. Along with ‘Daddy’, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Shreyas Talpade-starrer ‘Poster Boys’ has also hit the theatres.
