Arjan Bajwa

Is Bollywood prioritising how a project looks more than what it contents? After spending nearly two decades into the entertainment industry, actor Arjan Bajwa – who will feature in Madhur Bhandarkar’s The Wives, has an opinion. In an exclusive interaction, the actor stated that he believes Bollywood today is being driven more by trading and packaging than storytelling and character integrity.

Scroll below read all he had to say about the business of cinema – given the clarity of someone who has experienced both its unpredictability and its politics firsthand.

Arjan Bajwa: Filmmaking Today Is All About Trading And Not Filmmaking

Talking about the kind of content being produced in Bollywood and what he feels is being given more importance, Arjan Bajwa said, “Considering the filmmaking which is happening today, it is all about trading and not filmmaking. It is about making projects whether you suit the part or you don’t suit the part. People have just gotten into a game of repeatedly casting someone, even if they don’t fit the characters in the story.”

Arjan believes cinema has slowly stripped its heroes of inspiration and aspiration in the attempt to make them overly relatable. He said, “By doing this, they have taken out the inspirational and aspirational value of the primary characters. We always hear people debating about how audiences are not going into the theaters; it is our own undoing.”

He continued, “You have taken out the inspiration and aspirational value of your hero or leading man to make him a completely below-average, next-door boy. Hence, the audience doesn’t find any kind of repeat value for you.”

Arjan On Growing PR Culture, Networking

Arjan Bajwa also got equally candid about the growing dominance of PR culture, networking, and politically correct decision-making within the industry. He said, “It is a fact because everybody in the industry also knows it and believes it, but they are still going to do things that are run-of-the-mill and try to be politically correct.”

The actor added, “The business of cinema winning over art has happened over the last couple of years because earlier it used to be just about passion and pure art. Now, it has become more about setting up projects, not making films or cinema in its purest form.”

Arjan Bajwa has been part of several film industries, including Telugu, Hindi and Tamil. The actor has starred in films such as Fashion, Bobby Jasoos, Rustom, Kabir Singh, Bigil and more.
