While netizens continue to shower love on the Karisma Kapoor, Surya Sharma, Soni Razdan, and Jisshu Sengupta starrer, Bollywood Bubble interacted with the latter about why he said yes to the show and more.

During the exclusive interaction, Jisshu got candid about his first reaction to hearing the script, working with director Abhinay and the flavour Kolkata adds to the narrative. Read on to know all he said.

Jisshu Sengupta On Saying Yes To Brown & The Flavour Kolkata Adds To The Narrative

When asked his first reaction to reading the script of Brown and why he said yes to starring in the crime drama, Jisshu Sengupta replied, “What immediately stayed with me was the atmosphere of the writing. It had tension, but it also felt emotionally grounded. The characters weren’t written in black and white, and that always interests me as an actor because it gives you space to discover something new in every scene.”

Talking about how Brown transformed the city of Joy into the city of Death and the flavour Kolkata adds to the narrative, the actor said, “Kolkata adds a very unique emotional texture to Brown. We’ve all seen the warmth and nostalgia associated with the city, but here you see a quieter, darker side of it. The city almost mirrors the emotional state of the characters. It’s present in the silences, the streets, the mood not just visually, but also emotionally.”

Jisshu On Collaborating With Abhinay Deo

When asked about collaborating with Abhinay Deo and how the experience shaped the emotional and moral complexity of your character, Jisshu Sengupta replied, “Abhinay is very clear in his vision, but at the same time, he gives actors a lot of freedom. He was very particular about keeping the performances internal and honest. Many conversations we had were less about “how” to perform a scene and more about understanding what the character was carrying emotionally underneath and that became easy but also equally challenging but as an actor, sometimes these challenges bring those nuances to surface that sometimes we are not aware of ourselves.”

About Brown

Giving the show a 3-star rating, Bollywood Bubble wrote in its review, “The crime drama is a promising effort that offers a gritty, socially conscious Indian detective story. It combines psychological depth, social critique, and compelling characters within a Kolkata setting. The series demonstrates strong plotting, suspense, and a protagonist with resilience. However, it falls short in consistent character development, pacing, and technical finesse.”

Directed by Abhinay Deo, Brown is based on Abheek Barua’s 2016 novel, City of Death. It stars Karisma Kapoor as a Kolkata detective, Surya Sharma, Soni Razdan, and Jisshu Sengupta. The show premiered on ZEE5 on June 5, 2026.
