Nushrratt Bharuccha Admits Being Lonely And How Glamour Comes At A Price

When asked about how lonely it gets for people in the industry, Nushratt Bharuccha said, “You know, you asked me this question at a very, very wrong time in my life. So it’s not okay, and it’s terribly lonely. And it’s terribly mindfuck. Mere paas ek friend hai, Ishita Raj. Aur uske saath yeh bond banana, it took time. Yeh jo thick friendship waala scene hai, woh industry mein rarely hota hai, to be very honest. But hum dono hain. And pata hai, yeh recent months ki baat hai when I told her, ‘Ishita, who do I have yaar? Where are the friends? Where’s the support system? Where is that one person?’ I remember I had picked up an award from town—kya film thi, mujhe yaad bhi nahi. See?”

She added, “Memory bhi chali gayi. Kis cheez ke liye mila tha award? Kis cheez ke liye? Ki bhai, baithe baithe aa gaya award… kis cheez ke liye mila tha — yaad nahi hai mujhe. Jabki insaan toh poori zindagi unhi awards, accolades ke peeche bhaagta hai. But mujhe yaad kya hai? Ki main award leke gaadi mein bethi thi, and I was alone. I said to myself, ‘Whom do I tell yaar? I’ve won an award. Kis ke saath celebrate karoon? Khushi kis ke saath baantoon?’ It’s time only.”

Further adding, she said, “And yeah, everybody can make up the words and say, ‘Self-love,’ and ‘Make peace with it,’ and ‘Be happy with yourself,’ and ‘Peace to your own choice.’ I’m sure it works for people, yeah. And yeah, sure, I’ll eventually also say, ‘Okay, doesn’t matter. I’ll just be happy in my own little space.’ But do I not feel like, ‘Hey, I would have liked a few friends… chalo, that special person, that partner and all…’ toh main keh rahi hoon, theek hai woh toh hota hi hai… but real, genuine doston ka kya? Kahaan hain yaar?”

Nushrratt Bharuccha On Being Lonely In Bollywood

Speaking of being lonely, Nushrratt Bharuccha said, “Loneliness ek prevalent functionality system ban gaya hai. Why are we glamorising it? I honestly don’t understand that. I don’t understand why it’s so okay to say, ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t affect me.’ And why is it looked down upon when you pick up the phone and say, ‘Hey, I’m vulnerable. Hey, I would like to spend some time with you. Hey, can I—let’s go on a drive, let’s get ice cream, or let’s do a coffee. I’m not feeling the best.’ Yeah, why? Why? I really don’t know.”

The Dream Girl actress added, “Yeh brave hone ka jo pressure hai, apne aap ko sambhal ke rakhne ka jo tamasha hai… us par taaliyan kyun bajti hain? Maybe that person is actually not okay and they’re just pretending—because you guys won’t accept them any other way. Why are we making that difficult? Haan, mujhe ajeeb lagta hai. Mujhe lagta hai ki aap… I don’t know—somebody said this, kisi bade insaan ka quote tha—naam bhi yaad nahi. Ishita ne mujhe bataya tha, ‘The price you pay for reaching the top is loneliness. If you can accept and be okay with being alone, then you can be on top.’ And I don’t think that’s necessarily the way the world should move.”

Nushrratt Bharuccha On Being Ambitious But At A Price

Nushrratt Bharuccha said, “Main agree karti hoon. Main top pe chadh ke apne aap se cheekh rahi hoon—kya matlab hai uss ambition ka jiske peeche aap pagal hoke bhaag rahe ho? What I mean to say is: mujhe actor banna tha, main ban gayi. Mujhe acting karni thi, main kar rahi hoon. And, mujhe achha kaam chahiye tha, main kar rahi hoon. Mujhe ab aur koi height bhaag ke nahi chadhni hai… jahan main sab kuch peeche chhod doon. Mujhse nahi hoga.”

Continuing, she said, “Thank God, mujhse sach mein nahi hoga. I’m okay with saying, ‘Theek hai, main thoda do levels neeche chalega’. Main bahut khush hoon. Main unhi logon ke saath rehna chahti hoon jo mujhe genuinely matter karte hain, jinke saath mera real connection hai. And trust me, main ek interview mein bhi kaha tha: Main apne rishtey bahut sambhaalti hoon. Koi aapko mera dost nahi milega jo bolega, ‘Humne Nushrratt ko phone kiya, and she didn’t show up when we said we need you.'”

The actress concluded, “You already have to tell me you need me—kyunki mera kaam samajhna mushkil hai. Agar main yeh interview chhod ke chali jaaun, people won’t understand why. But agar tum mujhe keh do, ‘I need you, and I’m in a mess,’ I will leave this, do ratio, and show up for you. And I say this—kitne hi paise kama loge yaar. Kitni hi filmein kar loge? Kitna hi success achieve kar loge? Eventually, aapke rishtey, aapke log, aapke karm, when you are leaving this world na, wahi yaad aayega aapko… usi se jaane jaaoge.”
