What Happened Between Swara Bhasker-Sanjay Leela Bhansali?

Swara Bhasker wrote an open letter criticising the climax of Bhansali’s film Padmaavat, where Rajput women commit Jauhar. She argued that the film glorified misogynistic practices like Sati and Jauhar, sending a problematic message about women’s honour being tied solely to sexual purity. She also stated that such narratives diminish women to mere objects and should have critiqued these ancient customs instead of celebrating them, especially given modern India’s issues with violence against women. The letter sparked widespread debate, with Bhansali defending the film as a portrayal of historical context. Others, like Deepika Padukone and the writers, supported the film’s portrayal of women’s agency. Swara reaffirmed her stance, emphasizing her goal to provoke necessary discourse on women’s issues.
