Maalik Review

Pulkit’s Maalik is a compelling cocktail of raw action, regional authenticity, and emotional depth. Set in the heartland of 1988 Allahabad and Lucknow, the film immerses you in a world where power is currency and survival is a daily battle.

Maalik follows the journey of Deepak (Rajkummar Rao), a farmer’s son who rises through the ranks of crime and politics to become a feared yet revered figure “MAALIK.” Born into struggle, Deepak’s life changes when a personal tragedy forces him to take a violent path. Caught between the system and the streets, his choices gradually blur the lines between right and wrong. Along the way, he finds solace in Shalini (Manushi Chhillar), who sees the good in him and wants his to change for their child. But as power, bloodshed, and betrayal surround him, Deepak must decide what kind of legacy he wants to leave behind. The film’s strength lies in its taut screenplay packed with twists, emotional layers, and moral dilemmas, which makes it an interesting watch on-screen.

What Works

The screenplay is taut, packed with edge-of-the-seat moments, layered characters, and morally grey choices. It never lets up on the tension, yet balances drama and emotion with finesse. Shot entirely on real locations, the visuals feel grounded and vivid, capturing the dust, chaos, and character of the era with remarkable accuracy.

Technical Analysis

Maalik boasts high-octane yet artfully choreographed action sequences. The cinematography is striking, it captures both the chaos and beauty of the world Maalik inhabits, adding cinematic flair. The evocative background score adds layers to the emotion and grit, enhancing both the action and the quieter moments. The dialogues such as “Maalik paida nahi hue toh kya, ban toh sakte hain” or “Hum majdoor baap ka beta hai ye kistam thi humari, Ab apko majboot bete ka baap banna padega ye kismat hai aapki” are way too sharp, fiery, and nostalgic echoing the charm of classic Amitabh Bachchan era gangster films.

Pulkit, known for his intense thrillers, makes his theatrical debut with Maalik. His direction carries the high-octane sequences with emotionally resonant storytelling, making Maalik a stylish yet grounded thriller. The film showcases exceptional production quality, featuring stunning visuals and meticulous attention to detail.

Star Performances

Rajkummar Rao delivers a career-defining performance. As Maalik, he is fierce, vulnerable, and completely transformative showcasing his range and commitment. The actors’ delivery and dialect feel natural and immersive, rooted in the region. Rajkummar’s brutal yet beautifully choreographed high-octane action sequences enhance the film’s intensity without overshadowing the story.

Manushi Chhillar impresses with a restrained and soulful portrayal of Shalini. She brings depth and quiet strength to her character, portraying her as more than just a love interest. Her calm presence balances the film’s chaos, and her chemistry with Rajkummar Rao adds tenderness to the storyline.

As a seasoned political figure, Saurabh Shukla brings gravitas and restraint, making every scene he’s in impactful. His layered portrayal adds complexity to the power dynamics, proving once again why he’s one of Indian cinema’s most respected performers.

Prosenjit Chatterjee delivers a commanding performance with quiet menace and authority. He impresses as Prabhu Das, a tough and seasoned officer with 103 encounters to his name and his chase with Maalik as a police officer is worth watching. He brings a quiet intensity and authority to the role, making the character both fearsome and its unbelievable towards the plot twist.

The powerful supporting cast Saurabh Sachdeva, and Anshuman Pushkar shine, add gravitas and leave a lasting impact. Their presence adds weight to every scene they appears in the action thriller.

Huma Qureshi lights up the screen with her electrifying item number Dil Thaam Ke. Her confident screen presence, graceful expressions, and energetic dance moves leave a lasting impression.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Maalik is not just a tale of guns and power, it’s a deeply human story of survival, ambition, and the price one pays for becoming a legend. Backed by Tips Films and Northern Lights Films, Maalik is a gritty, emotional ride that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking. With powerful performances, fiery dialogues, and striking visuals, it’s a must-watch for lovers of gritty Indian cinema.
