Three women, living three different journeys, sharing pieces of one dream – Leena Yadav’s ‘Parched’ so far is disturbing, but beautiful.

Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee) a 32-year-old woman, married at the age of 14 and widowed at the age of 17, hasĀ suppressed emotional and sexual cravings, and has a son of 15 years. Lajjo (Radhika Apte) is a barren woman, tortured by her husband and taunted by other villagers for her infertility. The two friends otherwise live a mundane life, except when Bijli (Surveen Chawla), an erotic dancer visits them like a breatheĀ of fresh air and old friendship revives. Life further changes as Rani’s teenage son Gulab, spoilt and adamant, is married off against his will.

So far, the three leading ladies have been splendid. The film keeps unfolding layers of stories; stories that spark off as protests against feudalism, patriarchy, sexism, dominance that have been going on for ages now. The screenplay is gripping and doesn’t let you take your eyes off the screen.
