The popular streaming platform SonyLiv on Sunday released the official trailer of Huma Qureshi’s upcoming web series Maharani. The trailer features the actor in a new avatar and makes an impact with its hard-hitting presentation. Though this is not the first time we are seeing Huma in the OTT space. Huma made her OTT debut with Leila, a dystopian drama revolving around a woman’s fight against a totalitarian regime.

Maharani is set in the 90s with the backdrop of Bihar politics. Huma plays an ‘illiterate’ woman who finds herself in the middle of a political power struggle. Her look in Maharani is quite different from anything she has sported in the past. The trailer opens with Bihar politics being called more complicated than the game of chess. It shows violence and cast issues of the state.

Huma Qureshi is the Chief Minister’s (Sohum Shah) housewife who has to take her husband’s place in politics. It is when Sohum’s character gets injured, amid the media and party members waiting to hear the name of the next CM, he hands over the reins to Huma, his wife. The series will follow her journey and challenges in the new role. As we move on, we know the series promises drama, violence and a tale, which will keep us on the edge of the seat. There are several characters and each character has a role to play. “In a twist of fate, Rani Bharti’s life changes drastically, overnight. Featuring the dynamic Huma Qureshi in the lead, the show showcases how the current Chief Minister disrupts the state’s political machinery in a blink. While his party officials await the name of his successor with bated breaths, the CM’s sudden announcement shocks everyone to the core including his wife Rani Bharati,” the makers described the show in a statement.

“It’s not often that one gets to play a character where you traverse in extremes as an artist. Rani Bharti, has been one such role that got me to explore things that I have never done before and yet made her look extremely grounded and relatable,” she says. Directed by Karan Sharma, the show features Sohum Shah, Amit Sial and Vineet Kumar among others. Based out of Bihar, Maharani is a fictionalised series that is set to release on May 28.
