Rhea Chakraborty’s brother Showik Chakraborty was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the drugs case linked to Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. After spending almost three months in jail, Showik was able to secure a bail last week.

Now according to India Today report, the latest update on the case states that a special court under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has said that the charges of financing illicit trafficking or trading of drugs don’t apply against Rhea’s brother Showik.

According to the same report, NCB had arrested Showik and Rhea under section 27A of NDPS Act, which deals with ‘financing illicit traffic and harbouring offenders’ and can lead up 10-20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The special court judge said that section 27A of the NDPS Act doesn’t apply to Rhea and Showik’s case.

The court in its order said, “Section 27A of the NDPS Act is in respect of financing of illicit trafficking of drug. It is also not the case of the prosecution is that accused financed to illicit trafficking of drug and those drugs were supplied to various persons.” The court also cited a ruling by the Supreme Court which states that confession made in front of  NCB are inadmissible as evidence. So according to that ruling, a person cannot be convicted based on confessional statements. The court also noted that no drugs were recovered from Showik by the NCB.

Reacting on the latest development in Showik’s case, actress Taapsee Pannu took to Twitter and wrote, “Scarred a family for life. Karma isn’t too far away from those who made a foul cry for justice in the name of personal vendetta.”

The special NDPS court had granted bail to Showik on December 2.
