Yesterday we told you how Badshah’s latest song ‘Genda Phool‘ featuring Jacqueline Fernandez is facing copyright allegations. The rapper’s song has one line “Borloker Bitilo, lomba lomba chul…..lal genda phool” which is apparently lifted from the Bengali folk song ‘Boro Loker Beti lo’. The original lyrics are penned by Ratan Kahar, and he wasn’t given any credit in ‘Genda Phool’ song.

Now Badshah has issued a statement stating he is trying to reach out to folk singer Ratan Kahar but the lockdown situation is not helping him.

Ratan Kahar is a veteran folk singer from the Birbhum district, West Bengal who penned and rendered the song originally in 1972. Speaking about his lyrics being used in Badshah’s song, Ratan told media, “I wrote the song. The music, the words, everything is mine. Now, if people are dishonest, what can I do? I am extremely poor. Many people have taken my songs, but have not given me credit. They can’t write their own songs. They used my songs as their own. I live in a hut. I write songs of the soil. I don’t have the financial strength to drag them to court.”

In his defence, Badshah said that traditional songs are open for recreations and reprises. The singer-rapper further said, “I have been constantly trying my best to reach out to him and connect with him and be able to do justice to the situation to all my might. However, the lockdown situation has not been very helpful.”

He further added, “I urge and request any of the representatives who have been speaking on his behalf to help me connect with him so I can do whatever possible on my part on humanitarian grounds to put this right.”

Well, let’s hope this puts the controversy to rest.
