Karnataka HC Quashes Kantara Mimicry Case Against Ranveer Singh

At IFFI Goa 2025, Ranveer Singh mimicked Rishab Shetty’s performance from Kantara: Chapter 1 and subsequently issued an unconditional apology for the incident. Ranveer Singh’s legal counsel stated that due to the release of the film Dhurandhar, there is an increased threat perception against the actor, which is why the affidavit does not specify the date of his visit to the Chamundeshwari temple.

Karnataka HC Quashes Kantara Mimicry Case Against Ranveer Singh

The Karnataka High Court on Saturday quashed the FIR filed against Ranveer Singh, who was accused of mimicking the iconic Kantara Daiva scene. Singh had apologised unconditionally and expressed his willingness to personally visit the Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru to seek forgiveness. Justice M Nagaprasanna disposed of the petition filed by the actor’s lawyer, noting that the court would “admonish” him for hurting sentiments with his act.

Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Singh, submitted an affidavit of apology, explaining that due to the film Dhurandhar’s release, there is a heightened threat perception, preventing him from revealing the date of his temple visit in the affidavit.

The complainant, appearing in person, argued that while it might be a matter for Poovayya, it was a belief system for many. “Karnataka Police is powerful and protective, and nothing untoward could happen if the actor visits the temple,” he said.

Additional State Public Prosecutor B N Jagadeesha requested the court to direct Singh to inform the authorities of his temple visit date in advance. Justice Nagaprasanna stated orally that the actor should visit the temple within four weeks, and this would be recorded in the order.

What Happened?

In 2025, during IFFI Goa, Singh mimicked a scene from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1. This was while addressing the actor-filmmaker and praising his performance. Despite Shetty’s reluctance, Singh proceeded to imitate the scene. Subsequently, advocate Prashanth Methal filed a private complaint before the 1st Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. He alleged Singh hurt religious sentiments by mocking a sacred daiva tradition. The court allowed the complaint and directed the High Grounds police to register an FIR against Singh.
