Today, August 15 2025, India celebrates her 79th Independence Day and commemorate it that by heading to theatres to watch a high-octane actioner that showcases love for one’s country and countrymen? Well, taking advantage of the extended Independence Day weekend, two massive, much-awaited films – Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-NTR’s War 2, released in theatres yesterday. I watched both films and here’s a detailed report to help you decide if should head to cinema to watch it.
Coolie Depends Solely On Rajinikanth’s Swag To Survive?
Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie is undoubtedly one of the most awaited films of the years. Poised as a film celebrating 50 years of Rajinikanth in the entertainment industry, this crime action drama featured actors from across Indian cinema – Nagarjuna (Telugu), Soubin Shahir (Malayalam), Upendra (Kannada), Shruti Haasan (Telugu), Sathyaraj (Tamil), Rachita Ram (Kannada) and Aamir Khan (Hindi) in pivotal. However, the film falls flat.
This star-studded A-rated gangster drama may satisfy the Rajinikanth fan in you, as it majorly thrives on the actor’s charm, swag and legacy – but that’s all. While the story may have shown potential on paper, screenplay is blotched in several places and is the biggest letdown of the young director who has made a name for himself with stellar projects. Aside from its music, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Coolie – burdened by the weight of its own expectations and the legacies it stars, failed to live up to my (and several fans’) expectations.
War 2 – The Weakest YRF Spyverse Film Yet?
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, Aditya Chopra’s War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan as Major Kabir Dhaliwal and NTR as Major Vikram Chelapathi is just as much a letdown (if not more) as Rajinikanth’s Coolie. By far the most-hype film in YRF’s Spyverse – given it’s also Tarak’s Bollywood debut film, this actioner has done incredibly well when it comes to cinematography, production design, and costumes, however, it fails with what’s most important – the story!
The film’s screenplay is weak and keeps oscillating between themes of patriotism and friendship, throwing expected curve balls and maybe, just one expected twist. The film feels way lengthier than it actually and if you were watching it on an OTT platform, chances are you will skip through certain parts – including its endless combat scenes, at 2x speed. The music doesn’t help – it’s just there.
Coolie Or War 2?
In conclusion, both the big budget actioners failed to impress me especially given the hype surrounding them. However, it you really want to watch one – keep this MAIN point in mind – leave your brain in the locker at home and you will be able to enjoy both (to a great extent). While Coolie is sure to make you cheer from time to time, War 2 will entice you with its action.
Talking about the negatives (that are sure to make you think despite your brain being at home) – the twist and turns, twist and turns and twists and turns in the Rajinikanth starrer and the poorly written narrative may give you headache. War 2 – well nothing, you are likely to look at your watch or phone at least a dozen times wondering, ‘Is the interval coming now?’ ‘How long more?’ ‘Maybe instead of popcorn I should have purchased a pasta and have my face facing the food instead of the screen…’ It feels torturous – more than what the characters go through.
Keeping in mind neither film is cheap to watch in theatres (ticket price + F&B) make a sound decision before booking your tickets. PS: War ticket prices are nearly as high as Rs 1500 in IMAX screens.
