The highly anticipated biopic on former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly is gearing up to begin filming in March 2026, bringing one of India’s most iconic sports figures to the big screen. With Rajkummar Rao in the lead, the project has generated significant buzz for its scope, authenticity and globally recognisable locations. The actor confirmed being a part of the biopic back in 2025.
Rajkummar Rao To Begin Shooting Sourav Ganguly Biopic In March
According to sources cited by Pinkvilla, the makers are planning an ambitious, multi-city shooting schedule that will span London, Kolkata, and Mumbai. Furthermore, the team will film several sequences at real, historically significant venues that shaped Sourav Ganguly’s cricketing journey. Among them, the makers have chosen Lord’s Cricket Ground as one of the most prominent locations, a stadium that remains forever etched in fans’ memories.
It was here, after all, that Ganguly famously waved his shirt from the balcony following India’s iconic triumph at the NatWest Series, a moment that has since become part of Indian cricket folklore.
The source told Pinkvilla, “Makers have identified Lord’s and Eden Gardens as key locations to authentically recreate defining chapters from Ganguly’s cricket career. Lord’s, often referred to as the Mecca of Cricket, holds historic significance in Ganguly’s journey and hence makers have decided to shoot at the real locations.”
The film also plans to shoot at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the home ground of Ganguly’s early playing days and the site of several memorable Test victories. Work is underway to secure the necessary permissions, with the production team aiming to begin principal photography in March across multiple cities.
Sourav Ganguly Biopic To Go On Floors This March
A Source shared, “Motwane and Luv Films are keen on mounting the biopic on a grand scale. Shooting at the real locations was always part of the vision. Permissions are being worked out, and the team plans to begin filming in March at various locations like Kolkata, Mumbai and London.”
Rajkummar Rao, known for his commitment to transformational roles, has already begun preparing for the part. He will undergo intensive cricket training to master Sourav Ganguly’s batting style and on-field agility, aiming to deliver a performance that connects deeply with both cricket enthusiasts and cinema audiences alike.
With director Vikramaditya Motwane at the helm and production backed by Luv Films, the biopic is shaping up as a grand cinematic tribute to Ganguly’s impact on Indian cricket and culture. As the cameras prepare to roll, fans are eagerly awaiting the first look at Rao’s transformation into one of India’s most celebrated sports icons.
