The passing of Asha Bhosle has left Bollywood in deep mourning. The legendary singer breathed her last at the age of 92 on Sunday, April 12, after battling health complications. She was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital a day earlier following cardiac and respiratory issues. As news of her demise broke, the film industry came together to honour a voice that shaped generations and defined Indian cinema’s musical soul.

The grief across Bollywood feels deeply personal. For decades, Asha Bhosle’s voice formed the emotional backbone of countless films, memories, and milestones. Actors, filmmakers, and musicians grew up with her songs, making her loss feel like the end of an era. Among the first to pay tribute was Shah Rukh Khan, who fondly referred to her as ‘Asha Tai’. Sharing a heartfelt note, he wrote, “It’s truly sad to learn about Asha Tai’s passing… her voice has been one of the pillars of Indian cinema and will continue to resonate world over for centuries to come. A talent that will outlive many, she always showered me with blessings and love and I will miss her. Rest in Peace Asha Tai… love you.”

Hema Malini

Hema Malini also expressed her grief, recalling her deep emotional connection with the singer. She wrote, “Asha Tai no more! I just can’t believe how some one so full of life, she who lent so much vivacity and character to her songs has left us grieving. It is especially hard for me as I have an emotional connect with Asha ji – she has made many of my songs so popular with her unique voice and style. I had a very special relationship with both Lata ji and Asha ji who have contributed in no small measure to my rise in the film industry. It is a huge loss for Maharashtra and for the whole of India that can never be compensated or replaced ever!”

Akshay Kumar

Sharing his grief, Akshay Kumar wrote, “No words can convey the loss I feel at Asha Bhosle ji’s demise. Unki surily awaaz hamesha hamesha ke liye amar rahegi. Om Shanti.”

Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar penned an emotional tribute, saying, “To say we have lost a legend today would be an understatement. Asha ji was unlike any other, a voice that defined not only one generation but across a span of cinematic universe! I was and have been the massive fan of her voice, her art, her personality…Asha ji, your music will live on forever and we are blessed to experience the magic you have left behind forever! Rest in peace and power.”

Suniel Shetty echoed similar sentiments, writing, “Some voices don’t just sing…they become a part of your life. Asha Taai was one of them. We’ve all grown up with her in some way – in our homes, our journeys, our quiet moments. End of an era feels like an understatement today.”

Shankar Mahadevan

Renowned singer Shankar Mahadevan also expressed his grief, calling it a heartbreaking loss for Indian music. Remembering Asha Bhosle with deep emotion, he said it was “a very sad day for all of us and a very sad day for Indian music,” adding that her contribution is beyond words and her voice “is going to live forever.” He further shared that while the industry is grief-stricken, her music will continue to resonate across generations.

South superstar Jr NTR also mourned her loss and shared, “Deeply saddened by the news of Asha Bhosle ji’s passing. Her magical voice was the heartbeat of Indian cinema for decades and touched millions of hearts. She leaves behind a legacy that will live on for generations and will always be remembered with respect and love. My deepest condolences to her family. Om Shanti.”

Several other celebrities, including Triptii Dimri, Tiger Shroff, Athiya Shetty, Vicky Kaushal, Shilpa Shetty, Sidharth Malhotra, Ananya Panday, Manoj Bajpayee, Raveena Tandon, Malaika Arora, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon also joined in, expressing their condolences and remembering her unparalleled contribution to music.

Her mortal remains will be kept for a final glimpse at her residence, Casa Grande, Lower Parel, from 11 am on Monday. The singer’s last rites will take place at 4 pm on Monday evening. As the industry bids farewell, one thing remains certain: Asha Bhosle’s legacy will live on forever, and Bollywood remains deeply saddened by the loss of a voice that defined generations.
