Siddiqua Begum Khan, daughter of the late Shah Bano Begum, whose legal battle for alimony led to a historic Supreme Court judgment — has approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court to stop the release of the upcoming Hindi film Haq. The movie, directed by Suparn S Varma and starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi, is scheduled to release on November 7. Siddiqua claims that the film misrepresents her mother’s personal life and has been made without the family’s permission.
Shah Bano’s Daughter Appeals To STOP HAQ Release
The petition was filed in the Indore bench of the High Court. According to her lawyer, Tousif Warsi, the matter was heard briefly on Monday, and the court fixed the next hearing for Tuesday, November 4. Siddiqua has argued that the film’s portrayal of her mother’s story could distort public understanding of the real events surrounding the case.
Shah Bano Begum, who lived in Indore, had filed a case against her husband, lawyer Mohammad Ahmed Khan, in 1978 after he divorced her. In 1985, the Supreme Court ruled in her favour, granting her the right to maintenance under Indian law. This judgment became a milestone for women’s rights in India, though it was later overturned by the Rajiv Gandhi government through the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986. Shah Bano passed away in 1992.
Haq is said to be inspired by the 1985 Supreme Court verdict and journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti. The film follows Shazia Bano (played by Yami Gautam Dhar), a woman who challenges social norms and the legal system to seek justice. Director Suparn Varma describes Haq as a story of courage, equality, and faith — themes that continue to resonate even decades after Shah Bano’s fight for justice.
