Paritosh Tripathi opened up about how comedy has evolved over the years, particularly with changing conversations around language, women and body-shaming. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, he discussed whether comedy has changed for better or worse. The comedian humorously linked an unexpected lampshade falling during the interview to his observation that “comedy bhi gir rahi hai desh mein.” However, he also highlighted the promising new wave of young poets making their mark through comedy and live performances. Paritosh revealed that several poets featured on their show are under 40, with some as young as 21 or 22, and said many received their first major stage opportunity through the platform. Paritosh Tripathi On Comedy Changing
When asked about the changes in today’s comedy, especially in terms of language, jokes about women and body shaming, Paritosh Tripathi said, “Bilkul hai. Bilkul hai. Bilkul hai. Aur yeh kuch toh gira hai, khul ke. Kuch gir gaya yaar. Isi tarah comedy bhi gir rahi hai desh mein.” (During the interview, a lampshade fell down, which is why the comedian remarked the above.)
He later mentioned, “Aapko pata hai, hamare show mein jitne poets aaye hain, hum mostly 40 ke neeche ke log hain. Aur kuch toh 22 saal, 21 saal, 24 saal ki umar ke hain. Poets ne macha rakha hai. Aur kya-kya lines sunaayi hain, baap re! Bahut badhiya kar rahe hain. Aur unmein se bahut saare aise poets aaye hain jinko pehli baar manch mila. Hum… aur woh busy hain live shows kar rahe hain. Unka matter ban pada hai.”
About Comedy Evolving
Stand-up comedy in India has undergone a significant transformation from small, intimate pub performances to a thriving, digital-first industry with millions of viewers. Comedians now extensively use platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts to test content, engage audiences, and promote live tours. A focus on interactive crowd work snippets allows performers to entertain online without revealing their main scripted material.
The content has evolved to include relatable observations about everyday middle-class life, regional quirks, and cultural nostalgia, popularised by comedians like Zakir Khan and Anubhav Singh Bassi. However, navigating political sensitivities, online backlash, and public scrutiny has become a challenge, prompting many to balance between live venues and curated digital content. Overall, Indian comedy continues to adapt to new media landscapes while reflecting societal shifts.
