reese witherspoon, elle, legally blonde,

The Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, has started filming, and original star Reese Witherspoon has shared the first look at the series. Announced in 2023, Elle is a prequel series that will explore the life of Elle Woods in high school before she enrolls in Harvard Law during the events of Legally Blonde. Witherspoon, who originated the role of Elle Woods in 2001, is acting as producer, with Lexi Minetree taking over the role for the prequel series produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

Reese Witherspoon Announces Legally Blonde Prequel Series ‘Elle’ Is In Production

Reese Witherspoon shared the first official look of the Prime Video series Elle on Instagram. The photo is of star Lexi Mintree as Elle Wood, with her dressed in the character’s signature pink outfit on a pink bed, holding a corded telephone, letting the audience know this is a prequel series. Witherspoon captioned the post, “Harvard was hard. High School was harder. Our new series, Elle, is now in production!”

Reese Witherspoon is producing Elle through her Hello Sunshine production company. Laura Kittrell and Caroline Dries serve as the series showrunners. Kittrell was a writer and producer on the hit series Insecure, while Dries is best known for her work on CW series like Smallville, Batwoman, and The Vampire Diaries. June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott are confirmed to be playing Elle’s parents, Eva and Wyatt Woods, respectively.

Replacement For Legally Blonde 3

Elle seems to be taking the place of Legally Blonde 3. It had been discussed on and off for over a decade following the disappointing critical reception to 2003’s Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde. In 2018, it was reported that Reese Witherspoon would reprise her role as Elle Wood, with the film aiming for a May 2020 release date. But the movie never started production. Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were said to be working on a new script for Legally Blonde 3 back in 2020. However, no news has been revealed since.

On the surface, Elle sounds like a weird idea for a show since Legally Blonde is the start of that film. It is the inciting incident for the biggest character change for her. The brief glimpses fans get of Elle Woods at the beginning of Legally Blonde don’t naturally suggest a prequel series. However, Witherspoon has said the new show was inspired by Wednesday on Netflix. And it also isn’t hard to see it having similarities to The Big Bang Theory spin-off prequel, Young Sheldon. When Amazon acquired MGM Studios in 2022, they were said to be interested in expanding the studio’s catalog for franchise extensions.
