FryDay review

Directed by: Abhishek Dogra
Produced by: Sajid Qureshi, PVR Pictures
Cast: Govinda, Varun Sharma
Bollywood Bubble Rating: 3/5

Slapstick comedy and Govinda go hand-in-hand and in this film, the ‘Hero No. 1’ actor sticks to his comfort zone and proves that he hasn’t lost his impeccable sense of comic timing yet. Varun Sharma’s performance is equally accomplished, and his chemistry with Govinda is as smooth as velvet. Indeed, you’ll be reminded of Govinda pairing up with the likes of Anil Kapoor in ‘Deewana Mastana’, Salman Khan in ‘Partner’ and Sanjay Dutt in ‘Haseena Maan Jaayegi’.

Like any other Govinda movie, the story of this one too is replete with confusion and situational comedy.

Gagan (Govinda) is a married theatre artist with social worker Bela (Prabhleen Sandhu) as his wife. Due to her work commitments, Bela isn’t able to give much time to Gagan’s needs. On the other hand, Bindu (Digangana Suryavanshi) is tired of her husband Rannpal (Rajesh Sharma) who is ten years elder to her. Bindu starts liking Gagan, and even Gagan starts to develop feelings for her. What transpires after this, is something you’ll have to watch the film for.

Even though the story is nothing new, it works because a lot of dialogues and scenes are funny. There’s a theatre scene that will simply have you rolling on the floor laughing your guts out. Perhaps, the actresses could have done a better job. Perhaps, a few jokes could have been done away with so that the movie could be appropriate for a family audience. Despite these glitches, ‘FryDay’ does manage to stand on its own two feet.

Final verdict:

You can probably watch it if you’re a hardcore Govinda fan and still find yourself catching his movies on TV channels. If slapstick comedy is not your thing, you could watch ‘Helicopter Eela’ (also releasing this Friday) which has a more authentic, organic form of comedy.
