jhms and mubarakan box office

Akshay Kumar’s ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’ surely brought a respite to the box office which was famished. This year, many of the biggies came with much hullabaloo but failed to set the box office on fire. Who can forget the debacle that Salman Khan’s ‘Tubeligth’ turned out to be? However, that was not the only shocker Bollywood had to suffer. In the past few weeks, two big-budget and star-studded movies made it to the theatres, and crashed badly, with no hopes of revival. No points for guessing, for we are talking about Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and Anil Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor’s ‘Mubarakan’.

Talking about ‘Mubarakan’ first, the movie was a lighthearted comedy from a maker who has given us quite a few ROFL moments with his films, Anees Bazmee. However, despite the fact that Anil Kapoor was at his energetic best, and the rest of the ensemble cast, including Arjun Kapoor, did a decent job, the audience rejected the film. In its third week, it managed to collect a meagre amount of Rs 5.50 crore, taking the total collection to Rs 53.54 crore, thus sealing its fate of being a flop. Now the biggest heartbreak of the year, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. Imtiaz Ali’s cinema is considered to be an intellectual one, which strikes the chords deep inside your heart. Shah Rukh Khan is the king of romance and we were more than happy to see him back in his form. Anushka Sharma’s Gujarati avatar, though over the top, was appealing as well. However, right from the first day, the movie was doomed because of it being a disappointment on all the above counts, and what followed was critical and commercial panning, along with bad word of mouth. The result? ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ has turned out to be a debacle in SRK’s career, and one of the biggest failures too. The movie collected Rs 4.25 crore approximately in its second week, taking the total collection to Rs 61.88 crore. It has turned out to be a disaster.

Well, that puts an end to the box office fate of the two biggies of the year.
