This is the time when filmmakers intensely focus on making their film stand out to be in Oscar consideration. And now, we officially have India’s entry for Oscars 2024 and it is Tovino Thomas starrer 2018. The Malayalam film has been officially announced to be India’s bet for the Academy Award next year.

Tovino Thomas starrer 2018 to be sent for Oscars 2024

The film was in consideration alongside many other big and successful films of the year. Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and The Kerala Story were some names that were popping up. The jury in charge for selecting India’s official entry, headed by Kannada film director Girish Kasaravalli, made the official announcement on Wednesday.

Tovino starrer 2018: Everyone Is A Hero is set in the backdrop of the devastating floods in Kerala that happened in 2018. The film shows how the floods impacted the lives of people from all walks of life. Tovino plays the role of a man who leaves the Indian Army with a fake medical certificate. The film shows how he redeems himself during the floods. It also features Asif Ali, Lal, Narain, Kunchacko Boban and Aparna Balamurali and is directed by Jude Anthany Joseph.

Upon release, 2018 received wide critical appreciation. The depiction of the adversity as well as the performances in the film were lauded. Recently, Tovino also won Best Asian Actor for the film at the Septimius Awards. He shared a picture from the ceremony on social media, holding the trophy in his hands.

Oscars 2024 details

For now, 2018 has been submitted by India for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at Oscars. Last year, Pan Nalin’s The Last Film Show was India’s submission. The film was there in the shortlist, but did not make it to the final nominations. However, two Indian films did win the golden statuette this year. While RRR won Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers won Best Documentary (Short Subject). As for the next year’s ceremony, Oscars 2024 will take place on March 10, 2024.
