Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor’s upcoming film ‘Abir Gulaal’ will not be permitted to release in India, according to government sources. Originally scheduled for release on May 9, the film has faced calls for a boycott following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which tragically resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists and left many others injured.
Fawad Khan-Vaani Kapoor’s Abir Gulaal To NOT Release In India
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, ‘Abir Gulaal’ has stirred controversy primarily due to Khan’s involvement. The public outrage following the attack has led to significant social media backlash. Users are demanding robust action against Pakistan and questioning the Indian film industry’s ongoing collaborations with Pakistani artists. Despite the Bombay High Court dismissing a 2023 petition seeking a complete ban on Pakistani artists working in India, several political parties and film associations have opposed such partnerships.
Sources tell HT that exhibitors do not want to take the film as they fear backlash. “The production house is trying to negotiate with them. But it looks unlikely that Abir Gulaal will be released on May 9 for now. The film’s release may be pushed back till things are sorted. But when that will happen is uncertain as theatres do not want to take a film with a Pakistani actor now.”
After the release of the film’s teaser, it was met with calls for a boycott. Especially after both Vaani and Fawad participated in promotional activities, including a song launch in Dubai on April 20. In response to the tragedy, Khan expressed his sorrow on social media. He stated, “Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam (sic).” His message emphasised that his thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

Another Ban On Pakistani Artists?
Earlier, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) announced a blanket ban on all Pakistani artists. They stated they would take all necessary measures to ensure that ‘Abir Gulaal’ does not release in India. FWICE President BN Tiwari confirmed that strict action would be enforced against the makers of Abir Gulaal. They indicated that the film’s songs and visuals would not be played anywhere in the country. Platforms have been formally notified of this ban, and the cast and crew have been advised to refrain from any association with Pakistani artists moving forward. Consequently, no shows, songs, or performances will be aired.
When questioned about the future of Pakistani shows on YouTube, which enjoy popularity among Indian viewers, Tiwari mentioned that while they can only restrict platforms within their jurisdiction, the recent terror attack is likely to exacerbate tensions between the two countries regarding entertainment exchanges. ‘Abir Gulaal’ features Vaani Kapoor, Soni Razdan, and Ridhi Dogra in prominent roles. It was initially set for a worldwide release on May 9.
