Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has strongly dismissed a viral video circulating on social media that falsely claims he has “turned to God.” Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Akhtar clarified that the video is entirely fabricated and warned of legal action against those responsible for spreading the misinformation.
Javed Akhtar Calls Out Deepfake Video
In his tweet, Akhtar revealed that the clip uses a computer-generated image of him wearing a topi (cap) and misleadingly presents it as proof of a supposed change in his personal beliefs. Calling the claim baseless, he categorically denied its authenticity and expressed concern over the damage such content can cause to his public image.
“A fake video is in circulation showing my fake computer-generated picture with a topi on my head claiming that ultimately I have turned to God. It is rubbish,” Akhtar wrote, making it clear that the visuals and the narrative attached to them are completely false.
The veteran writer further stated that he is seriously considering approaching the cyber police to take action against the creator of the fake video. He also indicated that legal proceedings could extend to individuals who have knowingly forwarded the clip, accusing them of contributing to the spread of fake news and harming his reputation and credibility.
This controversy comes close on the heels of Akhtar’s recent public debate with Islamic scholar Mufti Shamail Nadwi. The discussion, titled Does God Exist?, was held last month and quickly gained traction online, with several clips from the debate going viral across platforms.
While many social media users praised Akhtar for articulating his views with clarity and conviction during the debate, others criticised and trolled him for his stance. In the aftermath, the circulation of the fake video appears to have further fuelled misinformation around his beliefs.
By addressing the issue publicly, Akhtar has once again highlighted the growing concern over deepfakes and digitally manipulated content, stressing the need for accountability in the online space.
