What Was The Controversy?

Rakesh Bedi, popularly known as Jameel Jamali, found himself at the centre of a controversy. This was after an old video resurfaced in which he used the now-prohibited term ‘Harijan.’ The issue gained traction when Azad Samaj Party Mumbai President Kailash Jaiswar criticised the actor and called for accountability. Additionally, the backlash intensified on social media, especially amid the rising buzz around Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Responding to the outrage, Bedi issued a public apology, stating that he was unaware the term was inappropriate. Furthermore, he also emphasised that he had no intention of hurting any community or sentiments.

Rakesh Bedi Apologises After Receiving Backlash

Responding to the controversy, Bedi issued a public apology, clarifying that the term was used unknowingly and without any intent to offend. Apologising, he said, “Namaskar friends, I am Rakesh Bedi. A few months ago, I posted a video in which I said that in our country, Bheem Rao Ambedkar ji worked a lot for Dalits, for Harijans, and for people of backward society. He worked very hard for their upliftment.”

He further added that he was unaware that the term is prohibited in India. Moreover, emphasising that his intention was not to hurt any individual or community, he expressed regret. The actor further stated that if his words caused offence, he sincerely apologises. He shared, “I did not say it on purpose. I did not know that it was prohibited.”
