Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love And War Budget Surpasses Rs 400 Cr

The buzz around Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal’s upcoming film Love and War is reaching new heights, and it appears Sanjay Leela Bhansali has just raised the stakes. The project was initially estimated to cost around Rs 350 crore, but recent reports suggest the budget has now exceeded Rs 400 crore, making Love and War one of Bhansali’s most expensive ventures to date.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love And War Budget Surpasses Rs 400 Cr

A source close to the production told Variety India, “Bhansali’s pursuit of perfection means he’s never satisfied until every frame aligns with his vision. That unwavering dedication is what has established him as a legendary filmmaker. However, the repeated extensions in production have significantly inflated the budget.”

The source further revealed, “Originally pegged at Rs 350 crore, the cost has now risen to Rs 425 crore, making it the priciest Bhansali project so far.” It’s worth noting that this estimate excludes the fees for the three lead stars. They have opted for a backend profit-sharing deal and will earn a share from the film’s theatrical revenue.

Shooting Schedule Extended

The report also highlighted that the initial shooting schedule was set for 120 days. It has already stretched to 175 days, with key sequences and dances still to be shot. This delay has contributed to the rising costs. Although Bhansali is primarily backing the film, Saregama India joined the project later. The source cautioned, “Even with these early recoveries, Love and War has gone significantly over budget, which poses risks in today’s uncertain theatrical market. But Bhansali has always been a risk-taker, and his previous successful large-scale films have often justified that gamble.”

About Love And War

Despite the soaring budget, the director has already recouped around Rs 200 crore from the film’s streaming rights. They were sold to Netflix for nearly Rs 130 crore, along with music and satellite rights valued at approx Rs 80 crore. Sources close to the project previously told Pinkvilla that one of the main reasons for the delays is the film’s grand scope. Love and War reportedly includes elaborate aerial action sequences that demand extensive visual effects work. Given the complexity of these scenes, the VFX process is expected to be particularly time-consuming.
