At the trailer launch of his upcoming series Matka King, Vijay Varma addressed an interesting coincidence that has caught the attention of film lovers: his character in Darlings and Ranveer Singh’s in the Dhurandhar share the same name, Hamza. While the overlap might seem like a fun piece of trivia, Vijay made it clear that the two characters are worlds apart in both tone and impact.
Vijay Varma Praises Ranveer Singh’s Role In Dhurandhar 2 Compares It With His Darlings’ Character
The connection between Vijay and Ranveer goes back to Gully Boy (2019), directed by Zoya Akhtar, where Ranveer played the lead Murad, and Vijay portrayed his ally Moeen. Reflecting on that phase, Vijay Varma opened up about how crucial the film was in shaping his career. He said, “It’s just a coincidence and an interesting piece of movie trivia. But yeah, Gully Boy was a significant moment in my life. I remember I was down in the dumps, when that film happened, it saved me, it gave me a career. So I’m very thankful to do that film, and with Ranveer of course, one of the finest co-actors I’ve worked with.”

When life throws a Hamza at you make it like a Dhurandhar Hamza and not like Darling's Hamza – #VijayVarma #DhurandharTheRevenge pic.twitter.com/NRB7aJWUEv
He then shifted to the present overlap, drawing a sharp yet humorous contrast between the two ‘Hamza’ characters. Vijay Varma added, “And with Hamza, he has hit it out of the park. I would just say, when life throws a Hamza at you, make it like a Dhurandhar’s Hamza and not like a Darlings Hamza.” The candid remark landed perfectly with the audience, who broke into laughter and applauded his take.
Vijay Varma Compares Hamza From Darlings To Hamza From Dhurandhar 2
The comparison stands out because of how differently the two characters are written. Vijay’s Hamza in Darlings, directed by Jasmeet K Reen, was a deeply unsettling character involved in domestic abuse, while Ranveer’s Hamza in Dhurandhar The Revenge plays an Indian spy operating undercover, driven by a mission of national importance. The contrast between the two makes the shared name all the more striking.
With Dhurandhar The Revenge emerging as a massive box office success and crossing major milestones, Vijay Varma’s remark also doubled up as a nod to Ranveer Singh’s performance and the film’s impact. At the same time, his reflection on Gully Boy added a personal layer, underlining how pivotal the film remains in his journey.
