Huma Qureshi in Partition 1947

‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ star Huma Qureshi would next be seen in ‘Partition: 1947’. She is making her international debut with this film. She essays a role of an interpreter to Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of India, who was instrumental in the last proceedings when the country gained independence from the clutches of British rule. The trailer of the film has left everyone impressed and it has become one of the most anticipated films of this year.

We recently met the beautiful lady and spoke to her at length about this project. We asked her how did she prepare for her role and what research she did for this film, to which she stated, “Well, Gurinder (the director) did a lot of research. So I always follow what my director tells me, it is always better. I am director’s actor. But khud se I watched a lot of YouTube videos of old leaders and how they spoke English. Because my character Aalia, she is an interpreter for Mountbattens. So the way she speaks English has to be very colloquial, very colonial. Bada tareeke se baat karte the. So I had to pick up that way of talking. For that, I saw a lot of videos of Vijaya Laxmi Pandit and a lot of other leaders from that time.”

Directed by Gurinder Chadha, this film is about a Muslim girl played by Huma Qureshi falling in love with a Hindu boy Manish Dayal. The India-Pakistan partition proved to be barrier in their love and how things change is something only the film will tell us. Huma was last seen along with her brother Saqib Saleem, in the movie ‘Dobaara: See Your Evil’ which was a remake of cult Hollywood horror flick ‘Oculus’. Despite good reviews, the movie could not fare well at the box office. Let’s hope ‘Partition: 1947’ brings some respite on that front, for the actress.
