Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan Review

Pyaar aandha hota hai, par kya aandhe se pyaar end game ho sakta hai? You can be blind in love but can blind love be true? Santosh Singh’s Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan – starting Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor, beautifully narrated a love story of blind man and a woman he met years ago who was prepping to play a blind character in her debut Bollywood film. After spending sightless, but beautiful weeks together in Mussoorie, their relationship breaks – but why?

And now, years later, when they unexpectedly reunite, will they rekindle their bond or has time extinguished the flames of their romance? To know these answers, and whether ‘aandhe se pyaar’ overpowers ‘aandha pyaar’, watch Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan – and here’s our review of it.

What Works

Vikrant Massey (Jahaan) and Shanaya Kapoor’s (Saaba) chemistry is refreshening, especially given that they do not use their eyes to romance or emote their feelings for over half the film. Shanaya delivers an impressive performance given that AKG is her debut film.

What Doesn’t Work

The pace is uneven and the 140 minute runtime seems stretched – it could be lessened by atleast 15 minutes.

Technical Analytics

Direction

Santosh Singh has delivered a relatable film that is sure to resonate with several couples of this generation. While it’s not the best film we have seen this year, Singh has delivered a film that is among one of the better films of the year.

Story

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan follows a sweet and simple narrative – a visually impaired musician, Jahaan (Vikrant Massey) and aspiring Bollywood actress Sabaa (Shanaya Kapoor) meet while traveling by train to Dehradun. While Jahaan is going to the mountains to find peace and inspiration to write new songs, Sabaa is on a journey to know how a sightless individual lives as prep for her Bollywood audition. During the weeks that follow, the duo form a strong emotional bond based solely through voice and touch and devoid of visuals. The narrative beautifully captures trust, loneliness, despair as well as carefreeness, selfless and selfish love as well as self love.

The story is touching – despite feeling stretched and far-fetched at times, and is sure to touch your heart, especially if you are watching it with your partner/significant other.

Cinematography & Editing

Tanveer Mir’s cinematography is on point, especially the scenic shots of Mussoorie. The visuals of the European city the duo reunite in are okay, as they fail to radiate the same magic we usually associate with locations there.

Music

Given that Jahaan is a musician, the songs are beautifully integrated into the narrative and are just there for musical relief. They help capture the feeling the lead stars are experiencing as well as jog memories years later.

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan Star Cast

Vikrant Massey delivers a believable performance as Jahaan especially when it comes to him having to remove his black glasses and perform scenes. Despite not being able to express with his eyes, Vikrant still makes you feel Jahaan’s insecurities and fears. Shanaya Kapoor has impressed us as Sabaa, especially given that AKG is her debut film. The Kapoor girl is sure to deliver wonderful performances in the future.

The supporting cast all do their parts wells and help in taking the narrative forward.

Conclusion

Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor’s Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan – despite being the love story of a visually impaired individual, is filled with visuals that will make you want to head to the mountains with your partner. And this trip will not be only for the two of you to spend quality time in the scenic locations but also get to know each other much more.
