Salman Khan’s father and ace screenwriter Salim Khan ringed in his 87th birthday today. He has been a writer for iconic movies like Sholay, Deewar, Don, Mr India, Zanjeer, and many more. While he was acknowledged for his contribution to Hindi Cinema, Salim Khan has also grabbed attention due to his married life. Despite being married to Salma Khan, he fell in love with Bollywood’s dancing diva Helen. The two even tied the knot in 1981. But life was not a bed of roses for them. On the occasion of Salim Khan’s birthday, let’s revisit his freewheeling chat with son Arbaaz Khan where he opened up about unexpectedly falling in love with Helen despite being married.

When Birthday boy Salim Khan recalled unexpectedly falling in love with Helen

During a candid conversation with his son Arbaaz Khan, the seasoned writer recounted his meeting with Helen. He shared, “Back then, Helen was going through a rough phase in her life. Unke pass kaam nahi tha aur age bhi aisi thi ki uss kisam ka kaam milna mushkil tha. (She didn’t have work and was at an age where it was difficult to get those kinds of roles anymore). She came to me and our work was going really well.”

Recalling how love blossomed between them, Salim Khan said, “Toh maine unko kuch hi dinon ke andar koi teen picturein unki karwa di. Toh unka aana-jaana shuru hogaya. Ab normally jab koi aadmi aisa kaam karta hai toh kuch expect bhi karta hai. (Then, in some three days, I got her a few films. Then we started meeting frequently. Now, normally, when someone helps you with work, that person also expects something out of you). “

He continued, “At that time, we both were young. Mera koi aisa iraada nahi tha. Maine sirf madat ke liye kiya tha. (I didn’t intend for it to happen. I was just trying to help her out). She started respecting my gestures and attitude. I always say that love is rooted in respect. You cannot love anybody whom you don’t respect. Wo jo respect tha, dheere dheere unki taraf se love me change hogaya. (The respect she had for me, eventually turned into love). Also, she didn’t have anyone in her life.”

On Salma’s reaction to his affair

The Sholay writer also revealed how Salma Khan reacted when she came to know about their relationship. “I later admitted to Salma about our relationship. She didn’t say you did something good, you should receive an award for it. This is an emotional accident. Kisi ke sath bhi ho sakta hai (It can happen to anybody). Then I managed it”, the writer added.

Not only his affair, but the screenwriter also grabbed headlines over his split with Javed Akhtar and facing financial crisis after that. However, it was Nutan and Sanjay Dutt starrer Naam that resurrected his career.
