Fans were left shocked after coming across singer Arijit Singh’s Instagram post last evening. For the unversed, the acclaimed singer-composer took to Instagram and announced his retirement from playback singing on Tuesday. But is the retirement a break or him completely parting ways with playback singing?
A new report now suggest that the singer’s ‘retirement’ is temporary as he is focusing all his energy in adding a new feather to his hat – direction. Read on to know all about it.
Arijit Singh’s ‘Retirement’ From Playback Singing Is Temporary?
Talking about Arijit Singh’s ‘retirement’, a source close to the singer informed Hindustan Times, “Arijit is going to be busy with his film as a director. He’s been very passionate about it for long, and that required his time and efforts. Among the flood of offers, he wouldn’t have been able to do it. He will complete his director duties. This is more like a break for a year or so.”
As per the report, Singh’s debut film will star Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s daughter Shora. Official confirmation is still awaited.
Arijit’s Retirement Announcement
Late Tuesday evening, Arijit Singh took to his Instagram handle and shared the heartbreaking news with his fans and followers. The singer-composer wrote, ““Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for the love you’ve given me throughout these years as listeners. I am happy to share that I will no longer be taking on new playback singing assignments.” He further wrote, “I am calling it off. It has been a wonderful journey.”
Given the uproar his announcement created, Arijit further clarified in his tweets that he won’t stop making music. He tweeted, “Just to be clear that I won’t stop making music.” In another tweet, Singh added, “I still have to finish some pending commitments, will finish them, so you might get some releases this year.”

Arijit Singh has delivered some of Bollywood’s most iconic and soulful songs. His hits include Tum Hi Ho, Channa Mereya, Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga and Hawayein. He has received two National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2025. Despite his decision to pause playback singing, he has not yet shared detailed reasons or outlined his future plans.
