The winners of the 71st National Film Awards were announced on August 1, 2025 and it had some expected and other non-expected winners. While several rejoiced seeing the winner list, we also witness chatter around Shah Rukh Khan winning the Best Actor in a Leading Role awards for Jawan and The Kerala Story being honoured with the Best Film titles. Now, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar – who is set to serve as a jury member of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) Best Short Films section, has weighed in.
Shoojit Sircar On Shah Rukh Khan, The Kerala Story Winning National Awards
During a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Shoojit Sircar weighed in on 71st National Award and stated that the final decision rests entirely with the appointed jury. He was quoted saying, “I feel that there is no point debating this from the outside. You leave it to the jury. We might agree to disagree on many things, but finally, what matters is, who is the jury there. Because that jury is going to be your final word, and you leave it to their sensibility.”
Stating that the jury’s decision should not be questioned, the filmmaker adds, “You can’t question what award they have given. I think we would rather question that before they start. Who is the jury? What are their sensibilities?” Reflecting on his own experiences, Shoojit spoke up about how Vicky Kaushal-led Sardar Udham was left out of the panorama section at the 2021 International Film Festival of India. He said, “When Sardar Udham’s panorama selection didn’t happen, I was asked the same things. I will say what I said then: ‘Whatever the jury has decided, I have to accept it’.”
