The Freelancer Review

The Freelancer was divided into two parts. The first four episodes were earlier released on September 1 and now the second part of the series is released. The second part takes us closer to Avinash Kamath’s rescue mission. Not just the mission, we also get to know more about Avinash’s character and how he became ‘The Freelancer.’

Story:

Avinash Kamath, an ex-cop turned mercenary, takes up the daunting task of rescuing his best friend Inayat Khan’s daughter Aliya. She is a newly married girl who is tricked by her husband Mohsin. He takes her to Istanbul on the pretext of a honeymoon and traps her in war-torn Syria against the backdrop of growing ISIS terrorism. Completely unaware of the situation, Aliya learns her husband’s intention. She realises that her in-laws and her husband have joined the terrorist group and have completely submerged themselves in the Muslim religion. From learning Arabic to wearing a Burqa, Aliya’s freedom is snatched after coming to Syria. She then tries to contact his parents to get herself extracted from the hellhole. Will Avinash succeed in extracting Aliya? Will he eradicate the terrorist group?

What’s good about The Freelancer

Storyline: The story of The Freelancer is intriguing. It tells a story of the other side of the world which is dark and toxic. It has the potential to keep you hooked or even at the edge of the seat. However, it is the execution and the screenplay that does not captivate your attention.

What didn’t work for The Freelancer

Predictability: Sometimes, you just know that the series will end on a good note. Sometimes, you know that the mission will be a success. Well, I had a similar feeling in this as well. It gets quite predictable not just about the story but also the next scene. You know what is going to happen next and hence, the shock value or the surprise value just disappeared. You’re no longer involved or even invested in the story.

Screenplay: The Freelancer is based on a book named A Ticket To Syria; however, it feels too fictionalised. While some things are too perfect, some feel too easy. Day and night, one officer is only making plans to bring the girl back home. I wonder if any people are trying to extract those who are trapped in the place in real life. Or why Avinash Kamath and his team didn’t do to extract those people.

Star Performances

Mohit Raina is terrific as police officer Avinash Kamath who turns himself into a mercenary named The Freelancer. He truly shines in all the shades and you can see how he turned this character into his second side. He looks handsome and performs his part brilliantly. Anupam Kher also smartly plays his role and makes a powerful presence in the second part of the series.

Kashmira Pardeshi impressed me this time with her performance because it gets a little challenging for her. Navneet Malik who plays Mohsin seems like he is overdoing his part. It didn’t feel natural to me in most parts. Manjiri Faddnis once again has limited screen space and did a fair job with her parts even though it is not a significant character. On the other hand, Sarah Jane Dia is also good on her part.

Conclusion

Concluding my review, The Freelancer – The Conclusion starring Mohit Raina is interesting but not engaging. The first 4 episodes focused on the mission and the characters. Unfortunately, the second part didn’t offer a full-blown extraction mission. It is an action thriller but with no thrills at all.
