The country is currently still reeling in the festive mood as the season of celebrations is still going on. Two days ago, the nation celebrated the festival of Diwali and yesterday, two films boasting a big star cast, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra’s Thank God, hit the theatres hoping to set the box office ringing. Diwali week is one of the biggest days of release throughout the year, and seems like it has worked more in the favour of the Akshay Kumar-starrer as it has taken a lead over Indra Kumar’s comedy.

Abhishek Sharma’s adventure drama starring Akshay alongside Jacqueline Fernandez, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Satya Dev, emerged cinegoers’ first choice in theatres and despite it being the next day after Diwali, the film managed to collect in double digits. According to a report in Box Office India, Ram Setu has collected around Rs 15 crore nett at the box office on its first day, taking the second biggest opening for a Hindi original content in 2022 after Brahmastra. As for Thank God, the film opened to the figures of Rs 8.10 crores at the ticket counters.

The report further states that the collections for Ram Setu are good in the bigger centres but it is the mass centres that are driving the business of the film. The film has outperformed its clashing release in Rajasthan, UP, Bihar and Mumbai. In Gujarat, Thank God could have given strong competition to Ram Setu due to the comedy genre but Akshay’s film has comfortably come out ahead as Thank God is not being seen as one of Indra Kumar’s famous mass comedies.

The word of mouth for Ram Setu has been good and the film’s business is expected to grow over the week. Bollywood Bubble in its review for Ram Setu gave the film 3 stars and an excerpt from it read, “Ram Setu is indeed a unique attempt in telling an Indiana Jones style of an adventure story, emerging from Indian mythology, and the makers succeed in making sure to do that to a certain extent, but it’s the amateur or plain bad CGI that plays a spoilsport.” We also gave Thank God 3 stars and part of its review read, “It is a fun and decent movie that might make you think differently about certain scenarios and situations. Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra’s banter is quite entertaining. Though certain scenes will make you feel bored and you will zone out, they are evitable.”
